HVAC

HVAC covers your air conditioner, furnace or heat pump, thermostat, and duct system. Most calls start as a repair; the question is usually whether repairing an aging system is worth it versus replacing it.

Typical costs

Diagnostic visit

Often credited toward the repair.

$59 – $150

Capacitor / contactor

The most common AC failure.

$150 – $400

Refrigerant leak repair

Costlier on older R-22 systems.

$500 – $1,800

Full system replacement

Depends on tonnage and efficiency.

$6,500 – $14,000

Ranges reflect typical U.S. residential pricing. Local labor rates and access can move them.

Common questions

My AC stopped working — what should I check first?

Thermostat batteries, the breaker, and a clogged air filter cause a surprising share of no-cool calls. Also check for ice on the refrigerant line; if it's iced, turn the system off and let it thaw before a tech arrives.

When is replacement worth it?

A common rule: multiply the repair cost by the system's age. If it exceeds about $5,000, replacement usually wins. Systems over 15 years old with a major failure are rarely worth repairing.

Does a bigger unit cool better?

No. An oversized unit short-cycles, leaves humidity in the house, and wears out faster. Ask for a Manual J load calculation.

Things to watch out for

  • A technician who recommends full replacement without showing you the failed component.
  • Replacement quotes that skip a load calculation and just match your old system's tonnage.
  • Refrigerant 'top-offs' repeated year after year — that means an unrepaired leak.
  • High-pressure same-day discounts that expire when the truck leaves.
